9th Annual Heartland Diversity Job Fair

PRESS RELEASE

KCMBA to Hold 9th Annual Heartland Diversity Legal Job Fair Attracting Diverse Legal Talent to Kansas City

The Ninth Annual Heartland Diversity Legal Job Fair (HDLJF) will take place Aug. 9 and 10, 2013, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in downtown Kansas City, Mo., and remains to be the only diversity legal job fair in the area. This job fair is different from other minority-focused job fairs because it focuses on the city and encourages diverse law students to make their careers in Kansas City. Recent graduates, 2Ls and 3Ls from across the nation have been invited, and a weekend full of opportunity and fun for everyone is anticipated. Currently, nearly 100 students and recent graduates are registered to attend from cities such as Atlanta; Austin, Texas; Brooklyn, N.Y.; Charlotte, N.C.; Cleveland; Fayetteville, Ark.; Houston; Nashville, Tenn.; New York City; Norman, Okla.; San Diego; Seattle; St. Louis, Mo.; and Washington, D.C.

The HDLJF was created by Kansas City law firms, organizations and law schools for one particular purpose: more diverse lawyers in Kansas City. The job fair is designed to expose law students of diverse backgrounds to internships, externships, summer associate positions and full-time employment to both the traditional and non-traditional legal employer. The event will highlight Kansas City as a fantastic place to live and work; in addition, it will provide great job opportunities for students from all over the nation.

The job fair will start with a welcome reception on Friday, Aug. 9, at the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association. On Saturday, the day will begin with a continental breakfast for students and employers before interviewing begins at 8:30 a.m. A keynote luncheon open to students, sponsors, employers and invited guests will take place from noon to 1:30 p.m. The speaker will be Judge Alok Ahuja.

Hon. Ahuja [who was born in Raipur (Chhattisgarh), India] was appointed to the Missouri Court of Appeals in December 2007 and assumed office in November 2010. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Kansas, majoring in philosophy and English. He received his Juris Doctorate in 1988 from Yale Law School.

Prior to his appointment, he was most recently an associate and member of Lathrop & Gage LLP, and associate at Shea & Gardner, in Washington, D.C. Prior to that, he was a law clerk under Hon. Richard D. Cudahy, United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit in Chicago.

Judge Ahuja is a member of the American Bar Association, The Missouri Bar, KCMBA (Board of Directors, 2007-2008 and chair of the Appellate Court Committee, 2006). He is also a member of the Eighth Circuit Bar Association (Board of Directors, 2007; Co-Chair, Programs Committee, 2006).

Judge Ahuja plays an active role at the Whatsoever Community Center where he is on the Board of Directors, as well as Lawyers Encouraging Academic Progress (LEAP) (Board of Directors, 2008-present). He was listed among the Lawyers of the Year for 2007 by Missouri Lawyers Weekly and as Best Lawyers in America in Appellate Practice, 2007. He has been recognized as an Outstanding CLE Contributor Award in 2006 by KCMBA and was honored with the Vanguard Award in 2012 by the Asian-American Bar Association of Kansas City.

After the keynote luncheon, the students will return for more interview sessions that will conclude at 4:30 p.m. The interview process will be conducted on a 50/50 basis. Employers will pre-select half of the students who they wish to interview. The remaining half of the interview schedule will be filled based on lottery.

The 2013 HDLJF continues to build on its past successes by welcoming students from a variety of backgrounds and geographic locations to showcase Kansas City and its legal community.
