We invite you to join us at the NAACP’s Twenty-Eighth Annual Lawyers’ Continuing Legal Education (CLE) Seminar to be held July 8-9, 2012 at the George R. Brown Convention Center, Houston, Texas.

For the past twenty-seven years, our training course has attracted loyal attendees.  Our focus will include an annual U.S. Supreme Court Review and Legislative Update as well as panels on Ethics and many areas affecting our legal, educational and social justice communities.

The CLE provides an opportunity for civil rights advocates and legal scholars to meet, greet and share strategies to assist African-Americans and other minorities facing civil rights challenges.

We intend to apply for fifteen (15) credits, including two hours of ethics.  For your convenience, pre-registration is available for $350.00 until June 7, 2012.  After June 7^th, registration and on-site registration for the two-day session will be $375.00.  Register before June 7^th and save $25.  The registration fee will include continental breakfast, one ticket to the Clarence M. Mitchell, Jr. Memorial Lecture Luncheon on Sunday, July 8^th, one brown bag lunch ticket, CLE course materials, closing reception and entrance onto the Convention floor.  One-day registrations are also available at $250.00.  If you are unable to attend the CLE, you may purchase course materials at a cost of $50.00.  Please make checks payable to the NAACP CLE Seminar (include credit card information on faxed registrations).  To pre-register for the CLE, please complete the attached registration form and e-mail or fax to:

Only One Day to Save Lives - Act Now! - The Death Penalty is Flawed in Application and Conception. Will You Ask Your Senator to At Least Have It Studied?

--Urge Sen. Lager (pronounced “Log ur”) to support and not block the cost-study amendment from being added onto House Bill, HB 1051, a bill which he’s shepherding in the Senate, and
--Thank him for voting a few months ago “Do Pass” Senate Bill 786 (identical to the amendment offered onto HB 1051 last night) during a committee vote.

Background info... Last night during floor debate in the Senate on HB 1051, Sen. Joseph Keaveny (D-St. Louis) offered an amendment proposing a death-penalty cost-study bill. The bill was tabled after some engaging debate and may well come back up for debate either today or later during this final week of the legislative session. The measure would require the State Auditor to study an equal number of murder cases in which the death penalty was sought and where it was not. No thorough study of the cost of capital punishment has ever been done in our state. This study is important for Missouri to fully understand the cost of the public policy to tax payers. Keaveny is also SB 786 sponsor. HB 1051 would direct the State Auditor to conduct audits of state agencies so the amendment would be consistent or germane with the primary bill’s legislative intent.

Please contact Sen. Lager, plus and your Senator TODAY urging them to support the amendment when it is offered.  Remind them that this is a matter of fiscal responsibility— regardless of how he or she feels about the death penalty-- and that taxpayers have a right to know the comparative cost of this 35-year old state policy. Please take this action during this final week of the session.

The St. Louis County branch NAACP will hold its annual Freedom Fund Dinner at the Clayton Ritz Carlton Hotel on June 5. This year’s theme is “your power, your vote, your decision.” The keynote speaker is U.S Congressman Emanuel Cleaver II of Kansas City and Chair of the United States Congressional Black Caucus.

Clean out your place and give it all to Allied Waste

Allied Waste will collect bulky items left at the curb from residential customers Monday and April 23. Residents living east of Jefferson Street should have items at the curb by 5 a.m. Monday, while those living west of Jefferson Street will have items picked up after 5 a.m. April 23.

Items accepted by Allied include furniture, mattresses, microwaves, televisions and tied bundles of scrap material under 4 feet in length.

Bags or boxes of debris, tires, yard waste, appliances, rocks, bricks, concrete, car parts, acid batteries and waste oil will not be picked up.

The city also will host an e-waste and appliance collection from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. April 21 at the Midwest Recycling Center on Highway 179 and a pharmaceutical take-back program from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. April 28 at the alley entrance to the police department.

YOUR TAX DOLLARS, HARD AT WORK- What's in a name? Turns out plenty.

The House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday voted 24-1 to drop the names

"Susan B. Anthony" and "Frederick Douglass"

from a bill that makes it illegal to perform an abortion based on the sex or race of the fetus. The bipartisan vote occurred on an amendment by John Conyers (D-Mich.), and was part of the committee's markup of the Republican-written Prenatal Nondiscrimination Act. But Congress being Congress, even the lopsided vote couldn't prevent a heated exchange among committee members. Rep. Hank Johnson (D-Ga.), one of the many African-Americans on the panel who strenuously objected the use of Douglass's name, offered two amendments - one that would have renamed the bill after former President Ronald Reagan, and another that would call it "The Tea Party Determines What Rights A Woman Has Act." Johnson later withdrew the amendments.

--Here is Conyers on the bill: "It is offensive that the sponsors of this bill would invoke the names of two of our nation's historic civil rights pioneers. The fact that a majority of Republican committee members voted to accept my amendment is an admission on their part that this bill never had anything to do with advancing civil rights. The bill's sponsors may give this bill any name they choose, but it will not hide the fact that it is an unconstitutional attempt to limit a woman's right to privacy."
